Kids, here are some simple explanations to help you understand new term about learning differences:

ADD/ADHD

Means you have trouble paying attention for as long as grown-ups want you to. It can make you feel nervous and unsettled. It can make you act before you think.

Focusing and paying attention is important for us to learn, but some of us have a really hard time doing this and we may need help to learn how.

Deficit

This word means that we have an area in which we are weak in our ability to learn a subject - like math.

Some of us learn math more easily when we use objects like apples, pennies and pictures. This is much easier for us than trying to memorize multiplications tables.

Once we understand how to teach our mind, the subjects that seemed so hard to us become easier.

LD

Simply means you learn differently.

You can learn! You may need to be taught a little different and you may need to learn other skills.

By learning skills and how your mind works, you will be able to finish tasks more easily and quickly.

Learning Difference or Learning Disabilities

Your brain learns differently than other kids. It may need to be taught the way it likes to learn.

Like each of us, you are unique; you have strengths in some areas and weakness in others. You will have to work harder in the areas you are weak and in the areas you are strong you will find that they are so easy to do.

When something comes easily to us, we don't always appreciate how good we are in that skill.

Try to focus on the things you like to do and are good at doing. We all have to get through school, but once we do, life will seem better because we will choose a career that lets us show off the best parts of our minds!

Learning Style

This is the way you learn. Some of us learn better by hearing, seeing, touching or a combo.

Special Ed

These are classes that can teach us how we learn best and they teach us special skills so we can learn on our own.

Some Special Ed classes will teach us a skill or a trade which will allow us to earn a living when we grow up.

Remember, being unique is wonderful.

Enjoy it.

Find areas of interest and hobbies that make you happy.

The world is a better place because we are all different.

Being different, letting the true "you" be you, will lead to happiness and fun.

Ask for help when you need it. Don't be afraid or ashamed.

Learn to like who you are and how you are unique!
