Simply defined, a learning difference interferes with a person's ability to process information and creates a gap between intellectual capability and performance. This discrepancy becomes most evident in the school system. Schools teach ONE way; and children who are unique or different learners are bound by this system that, for the most part, does not have the proper knowledge, teaching resources nor tools to support them. The tragedy is that these kids want to learn, and without proper instruction they may never have that opportunity. Generally, IQ in individuals with reading failure encompasses all levels of intelligence. Individuals with learning disabilities typically are of average or above average intelligence. Dyslexics, for example, may be highly intelligent, which serves to highlight the disparity between their reading level and cognitive ability. Often, these children possess a creative genius for multi-dimensional thinking, vision and complex strategy that is rarely realized. ![]() Learning differences (LD) may include difficulties with reading, listening, thinking, talking, writing, spelling, arithmetic, organization or ability to focus. Without identification and proper instruction, these difficulties can eventually impede a child's self-esteem, their ability to learn, their socialization skills and may lead to depression.
