Within the next five years, the POWER4Kids Initiative will have studied and compiled performance data on the most widely distributed and/or newly created scientific instruction and intervention reading programs used in this country. The first goal of the POWER4Kids Initiative is to demonstrate with absolute evidence to the public, state and local policy makers that all—but a small fraction of children—can learn to read. The second goal is to dramatically reduce excessive societal costs by positively impacting the inverse relationships between education, criminality and poverty. The Power4Kids Reading Initiative is the first independent nationwide initiative organized to dramatically alter the educational trajectory and the future outcomes for millions of American children. The study is the largest randomized, classroom-cluster design of its kind ever conducted and will:
